BHRDCA U/16 Beitzel Shield win wrap-up!
BHRDCA PILES ON THE HEAT
Box Hill Reporter Junior Cricket teams have recorded outstanding results over the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union Representative carnival held over the past two weeks with 5 of their 6 teams competing winning through to the finals stage.
Unfortunately with several sides coming home with a wet sail, last weeks heat wave intervened and all quarter and semi final games were cancelled leaving only top two finishers to fight out the Grand Finals.
The Carnival showcase event the Jim Beitzel U/16 turf competition saw Box Hill take on arch rivals the Eastern Cricket Assn. with both teams undefeated. Box Hill won the toss and elected to bat with the Mulgrave Reserve outfield running very fast. It was a slow but steady start and despite the loss of two early wickets the Box Hill batsmen rose to the challenge, the charge was led by skipper Lucas Grierson with a fighting 52 with great support from Matty Stewart 34. The final 15 overs saw Ben Joseph 44 and Nelson Lane 32* apply the blowtorch with some superb copybook running between the wickets to carry Box Hill through to a very respectable 6/209 after their 40 overs.
ECA began their inning with a real flourish before the lively bowling of Chris Rose 2/25 made some early inroads. With the breakthrough wickets began to fall at a steady pace helped by some excellent fielding backing the bowlers. James Box 2/16 and Jack Morrison 2/23 also claimed multiple scalps with ECA finally dismissed for 143 and 66 runs adrift. As coach Chris Box emphasised after the game, this was a reward for a team performance with every player going out with a plan and then executing it to perfection.
Individual awards were also presented to Lucas Grierson as Player of the Match, Nelson Lane as Player of the series and Sam Harte as Player of the U14 Allen Shield Series. Congratulations to these fine young cricketeers and to all the players, officials, Umpires, parents and supporters who made this the best VMCU Carnival in Box Hill history – a fantastic effort all round.
