Our junior representative teams have been battling it out in the VMCU Junior Carnival over the past week and it is fantastic to report that we have a fantastic results across the board with 5 of the 6 teams still well in the run for a finals berth at the end of week 1.
In the U12’s our Browne Plate team finished off the week with a resounding win over a strong South East CA. The improvement in this team is very clear to see as the boys have grown in confidence with every match played in what has been a vital learning experience for the players.
The Mitchell Shield team sit in 7th position with 2 wins and 2 losses. A nail biting 3 run win over Diamond Valley on Friday means that they face a tough must win final round against North West Metro to guarantee a quarter-final berth.
The U14 Nolan side have played some outstanding cricket over the week shrugging of a first round loss against Yarra Valley to rebound strongly and record three consecutive wins over Diamond Valley, ECA and North West Metro to ensure a certain quarter final berth. Great effort boys.
The U14 Allen sit in 4th position with 2 wins against North West Metro and Western Region JCA going into the final round in a tight championship against Diamond Valley. A win here would also lift us into the quarter finals race which would be a fitting testament to the boys fighting qualities.
The standard of play across the two U16 competitions has been absolutely first class. The Mackay Cup team sits two and two and goes into the final round against bottom placed Western Region on Monday to secure a finals berth. This side has shown they can mix it with anyone on their day and there will be a few nervous sides watching this result.
In the turf competition the Beitzel squad has so far carried all before them with excellent wins over Southern District and Churches, SECA and Diamond Valley. Their final two match’s against Gisborne and District and North West Metro are very winnable for the lads as they chase a semi-final spot in the VMCU’s primary competition.
A special thanks to our host clubs East Burwood, Blackburn, Kerrimuir and Heatherdale who have all done an excellent job. Also thanks to the umpires for their efforts on the long ot days and to all the parents (especially the mums) who have again excelled with the fantastic lunch’s they have prepared for the teams – we really are number 1 in this area.
It looks like being an exciting week next week as the carnival builds to its climax.
