Aching limbs, aging knees and dicky hammy’s were all put on hold on Sunday when the cream of the Eastern Cricket veterans turned out for the 15th Annual battle between the Ringwood and District Cricket Assn (RDCA) and the Box Hill District Cricket Assn (BHRDCA) for the coveted “Colonels Cup” and bragging rights as the Premier Eastern Veterans Assn.
At Cheong Park, hard earned reputations meant little where the Over 60’s locked horns. Sent in first BHRDCA lost early wickets and it was left up to Stuart Stockdale who with a battling 41 (ret), ably supported with some lusty late hitting from Sri Rajah and Alan Ellis to see Box Hill through to 114/9cc in their allotted 36 overs. For Ringwood Paul Robinson and Graeme Seymour with 3 and 2 wickets each were the pick of the bowlers.
In reply Gary Paget and Bill Stafford had Ringwood off to a sound start putting on 32 for the first wicket. The Box Hill bowling was tight and coupled with a slow outfield Box Hill remained in the match. John Kent threw a spanner in the works as he collected 2 /11 in a great spell and when Garry Walles fell for a patient 21 it meant Ringwood needed 7 runs off the last over to get the required runs. Kent’s last over started sensationally with a wicket first ball, but the task proved just too much and it was a well struck 4 by Russell McNeill that saw Ringwood home with 2 runs to spare.
Meanwhile over at Fred Geale Oval, the O50’s saw Ringwood batting first. Anderton settled in early and along with Dale Goldsmith the score rose steadily, the pair adding 47 runs for the second wicket. Steve Teakel kept the run rate going and a late hard hitting 26* from Vaughan took Ringwood to a competitive 144/6 at the close of the innings. Dennis McNiece 2/13 returned the best bowling figures for Box Hill.
Box Hill skipper Frank McCann and fellow opener Darren McNeil were quickly into stride and their opening stand of 62 set a solid base for Box Hill’s run chase. Kevin Howell, Dave Jensen and David Corrigan all contributed valuable runs to the cause allowing Box Hill to knock off the required runs with 8 overs still to be bowled in an emphatic victory. Phil Kickleton and Artis both took two wickets for Ringwood.
This meant that the “Colonels Cup” was on the line at the Over 40 match at Croydon Oval. Ringwood batted first with Andy Wu and Craig Buchan looking very strong against some sharp Box Hill bowling both taking their scores into the 20’s. After 18 overs Ringwood were looking at posting a very competitive total but as o often happens runs began to dry up against great bowling by Narendran Shanmugratnam, Matthew Vittiritti and Dean Jones who combined to take 6 wickest for only 38 runs in their 15 overs to close Ringwood out at 132/8cc.
Box Hill lost two early scalps before Brett Cunningham 41 (ret), Dave Cronin 18, skipper Danny Taylor 43 (ret) and Dean Jones 22* led a strong revival getting Box Hill over the line with 7 overs to spare and secure the “Colonels Cup” for the Box Hill Assn
The big winner on the day was the sport of cricket. It was fantastic to see the game played in such a great spirit by two strong associations, adding yet another chapter to the intense but friendly rivalry that has grown over 15 years.

The boys travelled to the lovely suburb of Sunshine looking for 3 wins out of 3 games and a semi final berth. Skipper Jarryd Taun-Henderson won the toss and we batted first on what ended up being a slow and lifeless deck. Will Hastings and Scott Edwards did the job opening the innings, taking the shine off the new ball and the grunt out of their opening bowlers. Hastings was dismissed for a fluent 8 and at 1/10 Michael Kitson strode to the crease. Coming off a cracking 183 in MS2 Kitson looked as though he had picked up exactly where he had left off at Ted Ajani Reserve the previous Saturday. The wide open expanses of Dempster Park weren’t big enough for the Englishman and he batted with a mixture of aggression, finesse and beauty on his way to a brilliant 103. In terms of run scoring Kitson played almost a lone hand but was aided by all of his partners to keep the scoreboard ticking over. At the end of our 40 overs we posted a very competitive 168 on a very slow outfield.
Early wickets would be the key, and it was Kitson again that stood up to cap off a remarkable all round performance. His brilliant new ball spell of 3/21 left the opposition reeling at 4/21. They were never fully able to recover from a top order collapse. Some smart batting down the bottom saw the scoreboard look a little closer but 2/29 from Josh King and 2/24 from Josh Cunningham saw the NMCA all out for 146, 23 runs shy of the target needed.
Our boys finished on top of the ladder after 3 rounds of qualifying games. We travel to Malvern on the 12th of January to take on the Eastern Cricket Association in the first semi final.
Good luck lads!

Box Hill North Super Kings hosted the defending Premiers Heatherdale and the Dales batted first posting a respectable 9-254cc with Brenton Toole 54, Jarrod Thorpe 44*, the main contributors. But the match belonged to former Sri Lanka star Russell Arnold taking 5-73 and making 48 opening the batting to see the Super Kings take the points and get back in the top 4, they look threatening approaching the mid season break.
Blackburn South were desperate to stay out of relegation contention and saw a chance against the winless Mitcham. Day 1 the Tigers could only manage 119 with Jason Thompson proving his class with the ball taking 5-34. Blackburn South faced a short session before stumps and were left at 3/25 at stumps and game on. Day 2 and the Cobras Seaton Mundy would turn the game once again hitting 50 with 5 towering 6’s to guide the Cobras to their second win of the season.
Vermont have gone to the top of McIntosh Shield ladder defeating arch rival East Box Hill scoring a massive 9-332cc on Day 1 with young gun Ben Gibson 86, Geoff Mann 47 and Brad Taylor 43 leading the way. Chris Borg took 5-85 to be the best of the EBH bowlers. Chasing a big total was always going to be tough, and Mitch Rickarby crashed through EBH taking 8-56 to see them all out for just 85, following on East Box Hill finished at 2-109 to avoid an outright defeat.
St Davids hosting Templestowe would see two days of dramatic action with Templestowe only managing 86, Christian Slattery 4-41 for St Davids. The home side staggered to 118 with only Michael Enticott 62* standing firm and Templestowe skipper Andrew Hone outstanding with 8-44 for the visitors. Templestowe 2nd innings got to 9/140 (dec) with St Davids finishing at 4/56.
East Burwood won the toss and batting first posted 166, led by Sean Bramstedt with 71, best for the Burners was Sujeewa Liyanage returning 4-50. Blackburn got to 4/60 at stumps. Simon Cocks broke Blackburn with a stunning 7-52 to see them fold for 117 in a match winning performance. East Burwood’s 2nd time at the crease saw them limp to 8-62 and again Liyanage did the damage with 6-23. East Burwood’s win moves them to 6th place.
Bulleen Templestowe travelling to Forest Hill dismissed the ladder leaders for a disappointing 127. Lee Woolcock led the way for the Bullants with 4/23. After losing a couple of early wickets, Luke Mason, 55*, steadied the ship guiding the visitors to safety and 6-183. The Bullants now sit 2nd equal on wins with Vermont and Forest Hill.
Wilson Shield Grade
Laburnum hosted Doncaster and posted 326 with Matt Henderson 111, Ross Henderson 57, Ross Theunissen 43 the best, Sam Noble toiled manfully taking 6-59 for the visitors. Doncaster’s innings never got going and they were all out for 150, Ross Henderson had a handy double taking 6-25. Doncaster batting a second time finished at 6-146 with Mark Albiston with 75 showed the type of fight placking first time around. Ross Henderson snared 4-32 to give him 10 wickets for the match in an outstanding effort and surely the 3 votes.
Koonung Heights continued its great start to the season with a win over Mulgrave Wheelers Hill after restricting the home side to 9-156cc with Cameron ‘Hotel’ Hall taking 4-31. The Nungers got them 6 down with Sahan Pathirnana 37 and the consistent Clint Proctor 36 doing the job.
Eley Park hosting top of the ladder Blackburn North and after being sent into bat the Parkers would struggle to 7/100 at tea against a very strong bowling line up eventually being dismissed for 137. Youngster John Rozakis made 53 to be the only shining light for the Parkers scoring his first half century. Dean Burton’s 5-13 did the damage for the Bulldogs. They were never really troubled resuming at 1/44 with a Ben Davis unbeaten century led from the front to keep the Bulldogs undefeated.
In other games Kerrimuir United 4-183 easily passed Glen Waverley Hawks 182 to record back to back wins, while Vermont South 7-348cc led by Sudesh Umayanga Guruge 144 steamrolled Heatherdale who replied with 141 Vermont South now sit now in fourth spot on the ladder.
